How to Research a Digital Marketing Provider Before Starting a Project

Most people research a marketing provider the same way. They check their websites and reviews. This is a very common approach and can’t be called ‘research’.

A better method works like a background check. You look for patterns, not promises.

Treat Their Own Marketing as a Live Audit

Every agency sells results, so check what it earns for itself. Search its main service plus your city, such as “SEO agency Calgary.” See if it shows up. Open its social pages. Do posts go out often, or did they stop in March? Check the dates on its blog too. A provider that ignores its own marketing may ignore yours when work piles up.

Dig Into the Proof Behind the Pitch

Case studies look polished, but they can hide a lot. Take one provider from your list and view website pages like services and past work with a critical eye. Ask what problems the client had before and after. See if the statistics include leads and sales or just clicks. Take a look at the client’s website to see if the story holds up.

Look for the agency name along with words like “complaint” or “left.” One complaint is not as important as how the agency responded.

Ask Questions That Make Them Think

Skip the usual “what is your process” question. Every agency has a smooth answer for it. Try these instead:

  • Tell me about a project that did not work. What changed after?
  • Who will do my daily work, and can I meet that person?
  • What happens to my accounts if we part ways?

The answers show honesty and control. Your ad accounts, analytics and domain should stay in your name. If a provider hesitates on that point, take note. Also pay attention to how they react when you ask. Calm and clear answers are a good sign.

Read the Contract Before the Proposal

Most people read the proposal twice and the contract never. Try it the other way round. Check how long the notice period runs and whether the deal renews on its own. Some agencies tuck a 90 day lock into the fine print.

Then ask who keeps the ad accounts and website files if you leave. Your name should be on them. Also confirm if the quote includes GST or HST.

Start Small Before You Commit

You can start with a small pilot campaign. Or sign a small contract with the digital marketing company to test how things work.

You may set two or three clear goals before it begins. Then watch how the team behaves. You’ll see results in a short time and you can decide accordingly. Review the results together at the end. A strong provider welcomes this kind of test. A weak one pushes for a long contract on day one.

Research requires just a couple of evenings, not months. You are not searching for a perfect agency but an ethical one who can communicate clearly and handle your money like their own.
